ICONIC MOMS

Studio UpdatesLauren Phelps

For years, I have been archiving and sharing my favorite inspirational images of iconic moms from yesterday and today.  I am drawn to capturing the quiet, intimate moments that seem little but are everything in retrospect.

The Iconic Moms series is inspired by the same reason I enjoy creating any mother-and-child pieces.  It's not about idolizing someone's mothering.  I have no idea what kind of moms these women were or are, but I do find images of parents with their children among the most vulnerable and honest insights into human experience. When you are with your child, you must leave a public persona behind.  I love seeing someone who is otherwise stoic and serious enjoying a candid moment, or someone who is seen as an icon or untouchable, and knowing they were touched with love.  I reimagine these iconic images and attempt to hone in on something real.  I never have a plan when I begin these and just feel my way through the story and relay it in a way that feels inspiring.

The Iconic Moms drawings, created in mixed media on toned cotton paper, reference my background in fashion illustration through bold ink linework, graphic gouache, and textural elements of chalk and pastel.  Each drawing features a unique blend of media, capturing the layered experience of motherhood.

Stay tuned for a big announcement regarding this special series.
